Barghouthi: Israeli gov't races against time to turn Palestinians into minority

RAMALLAH, (PIC)-- MP Mustafa Al-Barghouthi, the secretary general of the Palestinian national initiative party, has said that the rapidly increasing Israeli settlement drive was the most serious danger facing the Palestinian cause at present.

Barghouthi in a press release on Monday said that the current Israeli government was racing against time to implement settlement projects, which include the construction of 30,000 housing units in the occupied Palestinian lands.

The Israeli government is working alongside settlers' societies to create a new de facto situation in the occupied lands especially Jerusalem that would turn Palestinians into a minority in their own land surrounded by settlements from all directions, the MP elaborated.

He opined that the Israeli occupation authority's intention to encircle the Old City of Jerusalem with nine parks, archeological sites and roads along with annexing Kidar settlement to the Maaleh Adumim settlement bloc would lead to amending the legal status of Jerusalem and altering its landmarks in a way that would leave nothing for the Palestinians to negotiate about.

The settlement drive would isolate Jerusalem from the West Bank while connecting it to settlement blocs especially the E-1 area north of Maaleh Adumim, Barghouthi underlined.

The lawmaker called for Palestinian moves on all levels to expose the Israeli government before the world and to impose sanctions against it to compel it to halt all settlement activities, which are in violation of international agreements, laws and treaties.
