Yahya Ayyash

1966/02/22 - 1996/01/05

On Friday, the 5th of January 1996, Yahya Ayyash, the engineer and chief bomb maker of Hamas, leader of the Samaria battalion of Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, was assassinated in Beit Lahia,in northern Gaza. Ayyash was killed by the Israeli Shin Bet, he was assassinated with a booby-trapped cellular phone.People was crying on the streets that day,“Ayyash is killed! Ayyash is killed !", while the Zionists celebrated the death of Yahya Ayyash, not knowing about the retaliations that soon would come. After 40 days of mourning, the military cell of Ayyash began a series of martyrdom operations that shook the Zionist entity. More than 60 Israelis was killed in multiple attacks.

Hamas military wing, the Izz ad-Din Al-Qassam Brigades, students of the " First Engineer",took responsibility for a successful retaliation campaign, a mere beginning of revenge to the murder of a true Palestinian hero.Hamas extracted a heavy price from the Jewish state for killing a much respected, well educated, ambitious, and soft-spoken young Palestinian man. Yahya Ayyash a married man with one child, began his studies at Bir Zeit University in 1987, where he 1991 received a bachelor of science in electrical engineering. Ayyash planned to take a Masters degree in Jordan, he was denied permission to leave Gaza by the Israeli occupation authorities. He joined Hamas, after two years he became the most wanted man in Israel, the target for a massive manhunt.

Ayyash had that feeling that he would be killed,so he begin to educate and train as many Palestinian engineer students as possible. He taught how to make and detonate the first bombs from material that could be easy found at the time in Gaza. These bombs were followed by the manufacturing of Qassam rockets, developed by Nidal Fat'hi Rabah Farahat and Adnan al-Ghoul, both Hamas senior operatives. Nidal Farahat, the son of Um Nidal, was object of targeted killing, he died in an explosion on February 16 2003, in Gaza City. Adnan al-Ghoul was targeted and killed along with Imad Abbas, in an air strike while driving in his car in Gaza,October 21, 2004. Al- Ghoul was assistant of Mohammed Deif, the operative leader of Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades.
