GAZA, (PIC)-- Palestinian premier Ismail Haneyya on Wednesday welcomed the visit of Fatah central committee member Nabil Shaath to the Gaza Strip and stressed that the Palestinian reconciliation is a high priority for his government and the Movement of Hamas.

Following his meeting with Muneib Al-Masri, a noted Palestinian businessman, in his office in Gaza city, Haneyya said that such meetings among Palestinians is natural and address many important issues in the Palestinian arena especially the national reconciliation.

“We are talking today about practical actions and a consensus of opinion on observations and procedures that will lead us to sign the Egyptian paper,” the premier highlighted.

In the same context, Dr. Khalil Hayya, a member of Hamas’s political bureau, said that the meeting of Shaath with a Hamas delegation in Gaza is considered a prositive step in the bilateral relations between Hamas and Fatah and a step towards the Palestinian reconciliation.

In a joint news conference with Shaath held on Wednesday in Gaza, Dr. Hayya added that Hamas welcomes such meetings and pins great hopes on them, pointing out that there would be extensive meetings to discuss a number of issues in the Palestinian arena.

Shaath, for his part, said that his visit to Gaza was decided by the revolutionary council of Fatah, stressing that he was not officially assigned to negotiate with Hamas on the reconciliation issue.

For his part, senior Hamas official Ismail Radwan said during his participation in a conference on the reconciliation issue held in Gaza that Hamas does not encourage political wrangling, expressing surprise at Fatah for calling for reconciliation while there are serious violations committed against Hamas in the West Bank.

Speaking about the reasons that prompted his Movement not to sign Egypt’s reconciliation paper, Radwan explained that the paper included a point banning the resistance and the formation of armed groups, while Hamas supports the resistance option and cannot renounce it at all.

He also pointed out that there are other points which indicate that there should be security cooperation with the Israeli occupation, the thing which is categorically rejected by Hamas.

In another context, the Movement of Hamas strongly denounced on Wednesday Mahmoud Abbas for his desperate attempts to return to the negotiating table, saying that such attempts perpetuate the inter-Palestinian division, disavow the national constants and encourage the Israeli crimes against the resistance.

In a statement, Hamas added that Abbas’s declared intention to resume his negotiation with the Israeli occupation contradicted his previous promises not to resume such talks before a complete halt to settlement activities.
