The nightmare of death engulfs Gaza patients due to electricity shortage

GAZA, (PIC)-- Palestinian health officials and doctors have warned Tuesday that the nightmare of death was engulfing hundreds of Palestinian patients lying in the hospitals in Gaza Strip due to the deliberate reduction of electricity supply to the besieged Strip.

They added that although facts on the ground confirmed that certain Palestinian parties were involved in the electricity crisis in Gaza Strip for political purposes, the Palestinian citizens in Gaza were the one indeed suffering from such shortage.

Dr. Nafeth Na’im, the director pf kidney department in Al-Shifa hospital, the biggest in Gaza Strip, warned that hundreds of Palestinian patients who suffer from renal failure and undergo dialysis could perish anytime as a result of the electricity shortage because all dialysis machines are run by electricity.

“Even the one minute we use to shift electricity supply from the government source to generators is accounted for as far as the life of the patients are concerned”, asserted Na’im.

He added that doctors in the hospitals were forced to reduce dialysis sessions from three times a week to twice a week as a result of the electricity crisis. Many Palestinian patients lying in the hospitals appeared worried about their life after the reduction of the dialysis sessions although they know that hospital officials could do nothing towards the problem.

Moreover, Na’im opined that as long as the political rift remained in the Palestinian arena, the electricity problem would continue, underlining that the hospitals failed to properly treat 600 kidney patients, including 400 of them lying in hospitals and 200 in the outpatient wards.

For his part, Muaweya Hassanein, the director of emergency department, warned that if the electricity crisis continued, around 250 kidney and heart patients could possibly die as a result.

Sources in the PA government in Gaza Strip accused the “illegitimate” government of Salam Fayyad in the West Bank of having a hand in the crises, asserting that the Fayyad government failed to pay for the electricity bills despite the revenues turned over by the Gaza government and despite the European financial donation to cover the cost of Gaza electricity.

As this developed, the doctors appealed to the human rights and international organizations to immediately intervene to end the crisis and to save the life of hundreds of Palestinian patients lying helplessly in the hospitals.
