Al-Assad Warns of “Earthquake” if West Intervenes in Syria

Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad warned that any Western intervention in Damascus could lead to an “earthquake” that will destroy the entire region.

In an interview with the Sunday Telegraph magazine, Al-Assad said that “Syria today is the center of the region, it is the fault line that if you play with you could cause an earthquake. Do you want to see another Afghanistan or even tens of Afghanistan?”

The Syrian President further explained that any trouble in Syria would burn the whole region, and if the project was fragmentizing Syria, then this means fragmentizing the entire region. He assured that he is “aware that the West will certainly intensify the pressure” against his regime, yet emphasized that “Syria is different from Egypt, Tunisia, and Yemen… the history is different, so is the political situation.”

In parallel, Al-Assad indicated that his security forces had committed various mistakes at the beginning of the crisis, pointing out that “today, they are only targeting the terrorists.”
He warned the Western powers against sending their armies to Syria and reminded that his stance on the public protests in the Arab world was different from any of the leaders who were eventually ousted.
Al-Assad also clarified that “we haven’t taken a stubborn stance… after six days of protests, we began with the reforms… people thought that these were only to calm the people, but when we announced them, the problems started changing and the people started supporting the government.”
In addition, the Syrian president stressed that “the pace of reforms is not slow, and the vision should be a mature one… signing a law takes 15 seconds, but if it were not appropriate for your society, it could lead to division… this society is very complicated.”

“The conflict today is between Islamists and nationalist Arabs,” he said.

Syrians gathered in mass rallies in the Southern Syrian Province Sweida voicing their support to President Bashar Al-Assad and to the reform program that he proposed.
The participants expressed Sunday their adherence to the independent national decision and rejection to any foreign intervention in the Syrian affairs.
Syrian official news agency SANA reported that the participants assured that “they would stand up to the conspiracy hatched by foreign powers and aided with internal tools, which target Syria's support to resistance and its pivotal role in the region.”
In parallel, “the participants illustrated the Syrians' awareness of the conspiracies against Syria, saluting the Syrian Arab army which offered sacrifices to safeguard the dignity of the homeland,” SANA further stated.
Banners expressing appreciation for the stances of Russia, China, and all the friendly countries that supported Syria were raised.
